Day One of Syracuse City Pool Hopping!

We finally had our chance to jump into the city pools. Contrary to popular belief they were not filthy and disease infested. Well, at least I don't think they are diseased. Stay tuned for updates..j/k!

First, I would like to discuss the major differences we noticed between Town of Salina pools/parks and the three city pools/parks we visited today. One of the things I loved about the city ones is that you can just walk in! No need to give them and cash, your name or ID. They just do a tally of however many people are coming in. You do have to take a shower before you go in, which I suppose is a good thing. You are welcome to take your belonging with you, unlike the Salina pools where you had to leave them in a designated area. There are a lot more children in these pools. My guess is that because not as many people have their own private pools to utilize.

My least favorite part is that you had to take a swimming test in order to be allowed in the deep end of the pool. Speaking of deep, we are talking deep! The first one we went to today was a bit over 10 feet deep, the second 11 and the third 12! I suppose I understand why they make people take these tests. No fear though. As long as you can swim to one end of the pool and then back (in a designated lap lane section of the pool), you get a black striped wrist band labeled VIP. You are allowed to take a break when you get to the end (half-way through) but your feet may not touch the ground while swimming. It is worth mentioning that we did not take off our band and we were able to use the same one for all three pools even though the lifeguard told we we'd have to take the test each and every time we go to a city pool.

The band you get after passing the swim test (man, I have hairy arms!)

There was also a police officer/car at 2 of the 3 pools we visited today. Safety first, I guess..

Without further adieu, let's get to it!

The first pool/park we visited was Lincoln Park. More Information

It was a bit hard to locate the pool since I had never been there before. It was easy to drive by it. I really loved the way this park is designed and winter time when all the leaves fall you get a glamorous view of our fair city for the top. Once you turn into the park and go up the hill, there is a little parking area to you left. You have to park there and walk down the steps to the playground. The pool is just to the right of it.

The pool is 82 feet (or 25 meters) long and is divided into 3 sections - laps only, deep end (12 feet!) and shallow end.

The view of the playground from the top (once you park)
The view from the bottom as you are walking back up to where you parked

Pros:
  • Beautiful park/pool/play area. I really loved the outlay of it
  • Free to get it
  • Natural shade to the right when you walk in
  • You can take your stuff with you where-ever you go
  • There was a lady blasting rock and roll with her blue tooth speaker. This could also be a con if you find that annoying but the lifeguards did not seem to mind and neither did the patrons
  • Small-ish pool
  • Not too crowded
  • Having to take a shower (also a con?) Some people are filthy, I suppose and might use the pool to take their daily/weekly/monthly bath..?

Cons:
  • Have to take a swim test to be let into the deep section
  • Not allowed to jump in from the sides of the deep section. Only allowed to do so from the front. Not sure about this silly rule but OK. We broke the rule not knowing it and were told by the lifeguard about it after the fact
  • There was some candy wrapper and other small debris in the water and along the edge of the concrete when you walked in.
  • Having to shower
  • Allowing people to play their own music

A lot of the pros and cons can also be sated for the other two parks/pools we visited so I will not be repeating myself.

Stop # 2 was Schiller Park also located on the North Side and only 1 mile away! I had no idea it was that close. It took me way back. When we first came to this great country, we lived on the north side and used to frequent this pool. I remembered the big water slide is used to have. We had a chance to ask one of the lifeguards what happened to it and he told us that it was taken apart since it needed extensive repair and it would have cost the city too much month to repair. It is a real bummer! I used to love that pool for that reason but I love it even more after my visit today..want to find out why..read on!

Check out the link for more information

There was plenty of parking and the pool was not hard to find. At the highest point of the park you can get a great view of Downtown Syracuse! There was a police car parked right near the front entrance of the pool. The pool is TWICE as big as the one in Lincoln  Park! It is 164 feet (80 meters) by 25 yards wide! I thought it was as big as an Olympic pool and I was right! (Google said so..). According to the City of Syracuse website, the capacity is 485 bathers! Wowza! I wonder if it matters if they are children or adults.

It had the same setup as the previous pool - lap lane, deep end, shallow end. Again it is 12 feet deep!

Pros:

  • I felt safe since there was an city police officer on site (also a con?)
  • Pool was HUGE and no-where near capacity
  • Lifeguards were laid back - we were allowed to go in without taking the test again. They might have assumed we already took the test there..
  • Beautiful park/pool/view of the city
Cons:
  • Was the police presence necessary? He was siting near the front staring at his smart phone..
  • No water slide! This was the best part about this pool
  • Having to take the water test in such a HUGE pool. I am not an Olympic swimmer. Upon closer inspection we saw that they only make people swim the entire 164 feet and then back just a little. Still....

Pool was so big I had to take 3 photos!!

The last pool we visited today was Burnet Park. It is closely located to my in-laws who live on Tipp Hill. We are also buying a house near-by so I suppose this will be a frequent hang out spot for me in the near future. I am fond of this park for several reasons. First, I love the zoo! Second, the design of the park of unique. Third, we go sledding there in the winter (at the golf course!).

Here is more info on the park

According to the City of Syracuse website this pool is just as long as the Schiller Park one (50 meters!) It can accommodate 492 bathers.

Pros:

  • Beautiful park/pool
  • Huge pool with a ton of space
  • Laid back lifeguards (also a con)
Cons:
  • Crowded! Some kids kept splashing us with water since there were not too away of their surrounds and the fact that the lifeguards were so laid back did not help
  • No natural shade
By far I came up with the least amount of pros and cons for this one so if people reading this would like to add to my list, please do. I am sure that this is because I am biased and really like this park. You would think I'd come up with more pros though.

Until next time...Stay Cool Syracuse!

Day # 2 - The Rest of Town of Salina Pools

I was a bit worried about the weather today but we managed to hit up the remaining two pools in the Town of Salina. The first one was Wemesfelder Pool in the park right across the street from Lockheed Martin on Electronics Parkway. I was a bit worried when we arrived since the parking lot was parked with cars. It turns out there were some softball games going on.

Pros:

  • Wide open space gives you good view of the park
  • Pool has cement paving which does not get that hot
  • Pool area has some grass on which you can put down your towels and chill out
  • Staff were more laid back and we were allowed to take our towels with us. As you might recall at Richfield park we had to leave everything on a bench by the entrance
  • Pool had a few benches you could utilize
Cons:
  • It was hard to find a parking space. This could be an isolated incident even though I doubt it. This is bound to happen when you have two softball fields in the park
  • Pool was a bit crowded but not too much
  • Upon walking into the area and paying you have to walk around a wooden fence. The other pools allowed you a good view of the pool as soon as you walked in
  • There was no curve on the bottom of the pool around the edges. As far as I can recall so far only the North Syracuse pool (Kennedy Park) had one
  • Very close to the thruway and as a result you could hear the traffic

The next pool we jumped in was in Lyncourt and so far it is my favorite. It was Sehr Park located at Marsden Road in Syracuse. It was kind of tucked away and a bit hard to find but once we did we were very pleasantly surprised. I'm going to talk about the park and the pool here because I feel both deserve addressing.

Pros:
  • Park has a tennis court
  • There is also the oldest house in Lyncourt along with some photos I took. (see below)
  • Pool has a unique L-shape to accommodate 3 swimming areas - 3 feet, 5 feet and 8 feet. It was good to see something different and unique
  • Pool area once again had some grass where you could put your belonging and sit/lay on
  • The whole outlay of the park is unique and something we had not seen before
  • Nice and quiet neighborhood
Cons:
  • Staff/Lifeguards were easily irritated by the kids playing in the pool and actually told some kids that "water has to stay in the pool." What? Really? The kids were splashing too much..I guess.
  • We had to lave everything by the entrance again. We were allowed to take our towels and cellphones with us. ("at our own risk" the lifeguard added).
  • Pool was a bit crowded and it has the most kids we have seen so far
  • There were some kids/teens chilling in the park about to partake in illegal activities (by the looks of it)
  • Park was a bit hard/tricky to find because of it's location (tucked away in the back of the neighborhood).
  • It had a bit of a "city park" feel to it (the others were more suburban)

That's all for today! We were planning on starting the Syracuse Parks but it started thundering. Stay tuned! As always, all are welcome!

Introducing a Unique Idea for the Summer...Pool Hopping!

A few weeks ago I decided to relive a childhood dream. I wanted to see who would like to join me in trying to take a dip in ALL the public pools we have at our disposal in the Syracuse area. It's going to be a hot summer and who can think of a better way to spend it?!

Since today I lucked out and worked a half day, I texted my good friend Mary (who is always up for anything...that is what I LOVE about her!). She agreed to join me on short notice. Since I live in North Syracuse, I decided to start with Kennedy Park located at 114 Grove Street. Here is what I think:

Pros:

  • Cute little park and pool.
  • Not crowded at all (at least not on the 4th of July).
  • Staff is very friendly and laid back
  • I get in for FREE since I live in North Syracuse.
  • Non-residents only pay $3 to get it.
Cons:
  • Asphalt all around the pool to walk on barefoot. It sure gets really hot!
  • Really small pool which I guess is OK if there are not to many people swimming
  • Just outside the pool (around the edge) there was a metal "frame" that was really hot. You dared not sit or put you feet on it because it was extremely hot.
  • Lack of shade or places to escape from the sun.

The next pool we decided to check out is in the Town of Salina. It was just outside the village of Liverpool. It was Duerr Pool located at the park by the same name. Upon arriving I noticed that this park was significantly bigger than the North Syracuse Park. It has a softball field to the side and it was also more crowded.

Pros:
  • Bigger pool
  • Friendly staff (one of them let me borrow his goggles since my wedding band slipped off my finger and I needed to find it on the bottom of the pool).
  • Cement to walk on (instead of super hot black asphalt!)
  • A few spots that had shade provided by the trees
  • More benches to sit on than the previous park
  • Pool had a nice curve on the floor around the perimeter when you got into the water. You can hang by the edge of the pool and just chill out.
Cons:
  • Upon entering and paying we proceeded to go to a spot where we attempted to put down our belongings. A life guard came over and instructed us that we could only put out stuff in one designated spot near the front of the entrance to the pool. This included our shoes, wallets, cellphones and even towels. We were not allowed to leave them near us..a strange request. Especially when I noticed a few other people had their belongings with them..hmm!?
  • Having to pay is a bummer. It was only $2 but it will add up with this whole pool hopping experience.
  • There was a couple of stoner teens just outside the fence partaking in illegal activities..if you get my drift. They were smoking WEED! In plain sight! With kids and parents in the pool. I guess that's OK!?
  • The lifeguards kept instructing the kids to not do things which the kids would sometimes follow and sometimes not. It was just annoying. I know they were doing their jobs but it was annoying.

The third and final park we decided to check out was Richfield in the park by the same name in Mattydale. Same theme as the previous one since it is in the Town of Salina again.

Pros:
  • Big pool
  • We did not have to pay since Mary brought a 20 and they did not have change!
  • Cement to walk on barefoot
  • One shady spot
Cons:
  • The staff was just as bad, if not worse when it came to "instructing" kids not to do things. This one lifeguard kept telling a kid not to touch the rope that divides the deep section from the shallow section. The kid would not touch it for a few seconds and then resume.
  • No curve around the bottom of the edge of the pool
  • A bit more crowded that the other one
  • Had to leave our belonging by the front entrance again (must be a Salina thing..)
  • Only one shady spot

So far the second one was my favorite. We have two more in Salina before moving on the the city of Syracuse pools! Stay tuned for more!

All are welcome to join us! Next Pool Hopping is Happening Friday the 8th in the afternoon! Feedback is welcome! Leave comments, share..whatever!

Have Fun Out There!!
